Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Luis,
I am writing this letter to request you to allow a popular dish from my country "Chole Bhature". I am Sushant Khanna member of your club.
This dish is neutral in taste. This dish has two parts in first one we need to soak chick peas into water for a night before to cook them. As it contain chick peas so the nutritional of the dish is very high. On next day the water through away and chick peas will be put into the pan along with other spices such as salt, black pepper, turmeric, cumin seed etc. Once they are ready we can also add tomatoes, cucumbers and onions inside it and put coriander on the top it with some lemon. For bhature we need all purpose flour, add some water and little bit of oil and make small dough then deep fry this dough in big pan.
The dish is so tasty that everyone love it and moreover people will try something new and health as well.
I hope you will permit me to introduce this stall to the audience. Waiting for your response.
Yours truly,
Sushant Khanna

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. While you describe the preparation process, the explanation of why it should be included is quite brief and lacks depth. To improve, you should expand on the cultural significance or the specific appeal of the dish to an international audience, rather than just stating it is 'tasty' and 'healthy'. This would provide a more persuasive argument for its inclusion in the event.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical structure, with clear paragraphing for the introduction, the description of the dish, and the closing. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. For example, the transition between the preparation steps is repetitive, relying heavily on simple sequencing. To reach a higher band, you should use a wider variety of linking words and phrases (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in addition to this') to improve the flow between sentences and ideas. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the transition between the ingredients and the cooking method.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, including specific food-related terms like 'chick peas', 'turmeric', and 'deep fry'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'the nutritional of the dish' (should be 'nutritional value') and 'the water through away' (should be 'the water is thrown away'). You also use some basic phrasing that could be elevated to sound more natural. Focusing on learning common collocations and ensuring the correct word form is used will help you improve your score in this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
Your writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally hinder the clarity of your instructions. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'everyone love it' instead of 'everyone loves it'), incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'the water through away'), and missing articles or prepositions. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are noticeable. To improve, pay closer attention to verb tenses and sentence construction. Practising the use of more complex structures, such as passive voice for the recipe steps, would also demonstrate better control.
