Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing this letter to give you suggestion regarding a well-known dish.

In the event lots of dishes will be presented, i will be pleased to get you permission to represent dish from my country that describes cultural flavors. I am pretty much sure that if we showcase this dish in the event it will become most selling item.

The name of this dish is "Latafa curry". It is made with different kinds of ingredients, those are originally found extracted from fresh seeds of some vegetables. One more thing is that Diabetic patients can easily consume it because there is no use artificial sweeteners.

The main reason to include this dish is to get some money by selling it, that will be later on used for studies of poor students, who are not able to afford study expenses.

I hope you will have a look on this, and respond me back as soon as possible.

yours sincerely,

XYZ

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining why it should be included. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the description of the 'Latafa curry' is vague, mentioning 'fresh seeds' and 'no artificial sweeteners' without providing a vivid or appetizing description. Additionally, the explanation for including the dish—to raise money for charity—is a good idea but could have been elaborated upon to better connect with the event's purpose. To improve, try to provide more specific details that bring your ideas to life and ensure the connection between your dish and the event is clearly articulated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure, with each paragraph addressing a specific requirement of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'The main reason' and 'In the event' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother. The use of referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'those are originally found extracted from fresh seeds', which feels slightly disjointed. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your sentences flow naturally into one another rather than feeling like a list of separate points.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'cultural flavors' and 'Diabetic patients'. However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'get you permission' (should be 'seek your permission') and 'most selling item' (should be 'best-selling item'). There is also a lack of variety in your word choices, and some expressions feel slightly unnatural. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and idiomatic expressions appropriate for formal correspondence. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives would also help make your writing more engaging and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is a good start. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'give you suggestion' (missing an article), 'i will be' (should be capitalized 'I'), and 'respond me back' (should be 'respond to me'). Additionally, the sentence 'those are originally found extracted from fresh seeds' is syntactically awkward. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement, article usage, and prepositions, and proofread your work to catch minor slips.
