Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to inquire about the possibility of participating in an event and make a popular dish from my hometown. When I heared about the event I was so excited and I have decided to show my cooking skills to everyone in the club.

I am basically from Punjab, a small city situated in the northern part of India. I want to make butter chicken gravy served with sourdough bread. I believe all the students would like it because of its authentic taste and creamy texture.

The main reason to include this dish in the event is the popularity of Indian spices all around the world and this is the chance for the international students to taste the authentic taste of that spices.

I would be really grateful if you could please consider my request. I would be happy to discuss with you, the further details at your convenience.

Your Sincerely

Shikha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, described it as butter chicken with sourdough bread, and provided a logical reason for its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the description of the dish or the cultural significance of the spices to provide a more fully developed response. However, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use basic cohesive devices like 'The main reason' and 'I believe' to connect your thoughts. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', or 'in addition') to create a smoother flow between sentences and avoid a slightly repetitive structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'inquire', 'participating', and 'authentic'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'I am basically from Punjab' (which sounds informal) and the repetition of 'authentic taste'. To improve, aim for more precise collocations and avoid repeating the same adjectives. Using more sophisticated vocabulary related to food and cultural events would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are a few grammatical errors, such as 'I heared' (should be 'heard'), 'make a popular dish' (should be 'to make'), and 'that spices' (should be 'those spices'). Additionally, there is a punctuation error in the final paragraph with an unnecessary comma before 'the further details'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading of verb tenses and plural agreement.
