Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
I hope you are doing well. I am also fine. I read the poster that our club is going to organise an event to celebrate popular food from around the world. I really found this interesting because of which I would like to offer you to make "Chhole Bhature", one of the most famous dish of my country.
This dish contains two items, Chhole and Bhature. Chhole are basically chickpeas, which are cooked by adding in gravy made of onions and tomatoes with other Indian spices. Whereas Bhature are made from all purpose flour by frying them in hot oil. Together they taste really good.
I can surely tell that other students will definitely like it because it is a very flavorful dish. Furthermore, there are lots of Indian students as well in our college. Do let me know if you liked this idea.
Kind regards,
Jasmeet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, provided a clear description of 'Chhole Bhature', and explained why it would be a good addition to the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat basic. To reach a higher band, you could expand on the cultural significance of the dish or provide more sensory details about why it is popular, rather than simply stating it is 'flavorful'. Overall, the task is fully addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Whereas', 'Furthermore', and 'Together', which help the flow of information. However, the transition between the opening and the main body is slightly abrupt. The paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas feels more natural rather than following a rigid list-like structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'all purpose flour' and 'Indian spices' are accurate and relevant to the topic. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive and lacks sophistication. For instance, 'really good' and 'famous dish' are quite basic. To achieve a higher score, you should aim for more precise adjectives and collocations, such as 'traditional delicacy' or 'aromatic spices', to show a better command of descriptive language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I read the poster that our club is going to organise...' and 'Chhole are basically chickpeas, which are cooked by adding in gravy...'. While your meaning is always clear, there are some minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'one of the most famous dish' (should be 'dishes') and 'I would like to offer you to make' (should be 'offer to make'). These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent a higher score.
