Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing this letter to express my enthusiastic interest of adding a popular dish from country in the upcoming event. I would love to add shahi paneer in this list because it is best Indian dish which is famous all around the world.

I would like to share the recipe of this famous dish with you which I learned from my mother. This dish contains the gravy made with organic spices and some chunks of cheese which is also known as paneer in my culture.

I believe that this dish represents the taste of the whole country. Moreover, this dish is cooked in every part of my country with slight changes in spices and gravy which brings difference in taste. Therefore, the different cooking styles bring different version of this dish which represents the diversity of my country.

I believe that adding this dish would presents our country taste better.

Thank you for considering my request.

Yours respectfully,

Dharminder

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, described it, and provided a clear rationale for its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a club member. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat repetitive; for instance, you mention the diversity of your country twice in the same paragraph. To reach a higher band, try to expand on the specific sensory details of the dish or provide a more unique reason for its inclusion beyond general diversity. Overall, the task requirements are met clearly and effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. The transition between describing the recipe and explaining its cultural significance could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points of the letter. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus to enhance the overall progression of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enthusiastic interest', 'organic spices', and 'diversity'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'interest of adding' (should be 'interest in adding') and 'country taste' (should be 'country's cuisine' or 'flavors of my country'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Focusing on more natural collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing will help you improve your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('from country' instead of 'from my country') and subject-verb agreement issues ('this dish would presents' instead of 'would present'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. You have a good grasp of basic sentence construction, but you need to pay closer attention to small grammatical details like prepositions and verb forms. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher score.
