Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I am a member of the International Students Club, and I am writing to suggest a dish that could be included in an upcoming event.

Biryani is very popular dish in my country. Everyone like biryani because it is delicious and flavorful dish. If anyone eats biryani, they will not able to stop eating it. Moreover, this is also our traditional dish so at any event such as weddings, birthdays and other types of gatherings, it is a compulsory menu item.

Biryani is very simple to cook. The main ingredients are rice , meat , onions, tomatoes, yogurt ,mint, herbs and spices. Furthermore, you should include this dish in the event because it is famous all over the world and i am sure everyone will appreciate our efforts when we include this dish on our menu.

If you consider my suggestion, I would be very thankful to you.

Yours sincerely,

Yousra

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, described it, and provided a clear rationale for its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a club member. To reach a higher band, ensure your ideas are more fully developed. For instance, instead of simply listing ingredients, you could describe the sensory experience of the dish or explain the cultural significance of biryani in more detail to better persuade Luis. The response is clear and relevant throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'If you consider', which help the flow of ideas. However, the connection between sentences could be smoother. At times, the transition between the description of the dish and the reasons for its inclusion feels slightly abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'this dish') is always precise will help elevate the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Words like 'traditional', 'compulsory', and 'appreciate' are used correctly. However, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and repetitive (e.g., 'popular dish' is used twice in close proximity). To improve, try to incorporate more descriptive adjectives or topic-specific collocations related to food and events. For example, instead of 'simple to cook', you could use 'straightforward to prepare'. The current range is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'Biryani is very popular dish' is missing an article ('a'), and 'they will not able to stop' should be 'they will not be able to stop'. Additionally, there are minor punctuation issues, such as unnecessary spaces before commas. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as these frequent small errors prevent the writing from reaching a higher band.
