Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
I hope you are in great spirits. I am writing to express my interest to participate in International food fest, I would like to present my country with our most demanding dish.
My name is Mehakjot Singh, and I am the member of an international student's club for the past 2 years. Recently, I have seen an article about food festival in library. So, I would like to participate in it with ours country special food item called 'panipuri'.
Panipuri is the mixture of crispy flour shells, boiled potatoes, and sweet water. It is enjoyed by the taste of ages. Although there are several significantly Main courses, panipuri is the most demanding food item in appetizer. Furthermore, this is the only dish which could be enjoyed while eating by various nationalities without any dissatisfaction. In addition, It gives the taste of our culture to them.
I would kindly request you to give me a chance for this special event. I hope a positive prompt response.
Thankyou for your time and consideration.
Yours faithfully
Mehak

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, described it as a mixture of crispy shells and potatoes, and provided a clear rationale for its inclusion, noting its cultural appeal and universal popularity. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of ideas is slightly basic. To reach a higher band, you could provide more vivid sensory details about the dish or elaborate further on why it would specifically enhance the 'International food fest' atmosphere. Overall, the task is fulfilled effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In addition', and 'Although' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. For instance, the jump from introducing yourself to describing the dish could be smoother. Paragraphing is used, but the internal structure of the second paragraph is a bit dense. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring they flow more naturally would elevate the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'crispy', 'dissatisfaction', and 'consideration'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'most demanding dish' is not the correct way to describe a popular food; 'popular' or 'sought-after' would be more natural. Similarly, 'enjoyed by the taste of ages' is an awkward phrasing. While your meaning is clear, the vocabulary lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Focusing on collocations—words that naturally go together—will help improve your lexical control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am the member of an international student's club' (missing article 'a'), 'ours country' (incorrect possessive), and 'I hope a positive prompt response' (missing verb). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some minor errors with capitalization and commas. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
