IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You are a member of an International Students' club. The club is organising an event to celebrate popular food from around the world.
Write a letter to the event organiser, Luis. In your letter
- offer to make a popular dish from your country
- describe what this dish is
- explain why it should be included in the event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Luis,
My name is Alex, and I am writing this letter to request you to include one of the dishes from my country, Italy.
However, I was thinking if I could include Tiramisu from my country in the upcoming event. This dish is served as dessert and is quite popular among youngsters because the main flavour of this cake is coffee and coffee is loved by almost everyone. The lady fingers in the dish are dipped in freshly brewed espresso and after that it is topped by the sweet cream.
That makes the overall dessert even more tasty.
The major reason this dish should be included is because of its balanced taste. Since, everybody will be bringing their own food from around the globe. It will be a great way for me to show my culture and tradition to the other members of the club. In addition to this, I would also be able to connect with people from different backgrounds. Consequently, it will be a great way to make friends.
I would be grateful if you consider my request. Looking forward to your response.
Yours sincerely,
Alex Xavier

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make Tiramisu, provided a descriptive explanation of its ingredients and preparation, and justified its inclusion by highlighting its balanced taste and cultural significance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of an international student event. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening sentence is more direct; for example, instead of 'request you to include', you could simply state your intention to contribute a dish.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You have used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this', 'Consequently', and 'Since', which help connect your sentences effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve further, ensure that your transitions between sentences are always natural; for instance, the transition between the description of the dish and the reason for its inclusion could be slightly smoother to avoid a sense of abruptness.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for this task. Phrases like 'freshly brewed espresso', 'balanced taste', and 'cultural significance' show an ability to use descriptive language effectively. There is a good attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary related to food. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'request you to include' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'topped by the sweet cream' (where 'topped with' would be more idiomatic). Expanding your range to include more sophisticated collocations would help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. Your control over punctuation is generally good, and the meaning is always clear. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'I was thinking if I could include' (which is slightly informal and could be 'I would like to propose') and 'topped by' instead of 'topped with'. These errors are non-systematic and do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice constructions, with greater precision.
