Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir,

My name is Jay Panchal and I am a member of student's club at university and In order to celebrate popular food across the world we are planning an event I am passionate about cooking and I want to cook dal dhokali, which is from Gujarat, India for the event.

The dish is famous in Gujarat not only for the taste but also for the nutritional value it has. Just like the name it contains a plain chick peas dal and tortillas which are made from wheat flour. Although it requires less preparation and time, it tastes delicious.

The prime reason for dal dhokali to be included is that it has cultural value and significance of how simple food could help to full fill the protein requirement. In addition to that, few of my local friends have tried it and they were superbly impressed by it so, it is time to introduce this dish to everyone.

I am looking forward to your response on this.

Yours sincerely,

Jay Panchal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, described it clearly as a combination of dal and wheat-based tortillas, and provided a logical explanation for its inclusion, focusing on its nutritional value and cultural significance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening salutation matches the prompt; you addressed the letter to 'Dear sir' instead of the requested 'Dear Luis'. Additionally, while the ideas are relevant, expanding slightly more on the 'cultural significance' would have provided a more fully developed response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'In addition to that', and 'The prime reason for'. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by minor punctuation issues, such as the lack of a full stop after 'event' in the first paragraph, which makes the sentence structure run on. The use of referencing is generally clear, and the progression of ideas from the offer to the description and finally the justification is logical and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'nutritional value', 'cultural significance', and 'protein requirement'. There are some minor errors in word choice and phrasing, such as 'full fill' (should be 'fulfill') and 'superbly impressed' (which is slightly unnatural in this context; 'highly impressed' would be better). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision required for a higher band. Focusing on more natural collocations will help improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the 'Although...' clause in the second paragraph. However, there are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('member of student's club' should be 'a member of the student club') and punctuation errors, such as the run-on sentence in the introduction. There is also a slight issue with subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic punctuation and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
