Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Luis,
I'm writing this letter with regard to next month's food festival. I want to let you know that I'm also willing to participate in it and represent my culture and country.
Since our club is hosting an international food event, I was wondering if it would be a good idea for me to represent my hometown, and prepare one of our traditional meal which is unique and delicious.
As there are varieties of food items belong to my culture, I am much confused of what to select and present on this event. Among all the dishes, I would like to prepare polsambol which is easy to make as well as unique to my country as it is a tropical country.
Polsambol is made up of Chop coconut which is mixed with chilly flexes, salt, papper , and also dry fish, onion which will give different flavor.
As a Sri Lankan, I would love to introduce and represent my country to this festival due to make you know that how delicious my food and tasty when it is in unique way.
Thank you,
Kalani

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organizer. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention that the dish is 'unique and delicious,' you could have provided more vivid sensory details or cultural context to make the description more engaging. Additionally, the explanation for why it should be included is a bit repetitive. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully extended with specific details that demonstrate your ability to communicate effectively in a semi-formal context.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the introduction to the specific proposal and finally the description of the dish. Paragraphing is used, though the indentation is inconsistent. You use some cohesive devices like 'Since,' 'Among all the dishes,' and 'As a Sri Lankan,' which help the flow. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the connection between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition into the description of the ingredients is abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring consistent paragraph structure would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'participate,' 'represent,' and 'traditional.' However, there are several spelling errors ('chilly flexes' instead of 'chili flakes,' 'papper' instead of 'pepper,' 'chop coconut' instead of 'chopped coconut') and word choice issues ('much confused of' instead of 'confused about'). These errors occasionally distract the reader. To improve, focus on learning the correct spelling of common food-related terms and pay closer attention to collocations—words that naturally go together—to ensure your writing sounds more natural and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is a good start. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the clarity of your writing. Examples include 'varieties of food items belong to' (should be 'belonging to'), 'on this event' (should be 'at this event'), and 'due to make you know' (which is grammatically incorrect). While these errors do not completely prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they are frequent enough to lower the score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions to improve your accuracy.
