Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I hope life treats you well. I am writing this letter to express my happiness. I heard the news that we are organising a big event to celebrate popular cuisines from all over the world.
As a member of this club, I would like to recommend a dish from my home country. The dish is "Sarso ka Saag and Makki ki roti". This dish is very popular not only among Punjabis but also all over the world.
Apart from this, this dish is very healthy as it does not contain any spices or oil. Every person can eat it and enjoy the taste of this dish.
Moreover, it is easy to cook this dish. My mother and I can help the chefs cook this dish.
I hope you add this dish to the food event. Thank you for reading my opinion through this letter. Please inform me if you choose this dish for the event so that my mother and I can bring some ingredients for this dish.
Thank you

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You offered to make a dish, described it, and provided a clear rationale for its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, although the opening salutation 'Dear Sir/Madam' contradicts the instruction to address the letter to 'Luis'. This is a minor oversight in task fulfillment. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the description of the dish could be slightly more detailed to fully engage the reader. Overall, you have successfully communicated your intent and provided sufficient information to meet the requirements of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your message easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this' and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your transitions and ensure that the connection between sentences feels more natural rather than relying on standard list-like connectors. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body, and conclusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. You are able to convey your meaning clearly, using terms like 'cuisines', 'ingredients', and 'recommend'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and repetitive. For example, you use the word 'dish' multiple times in close proximity. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms or descriptive adjectives to enhance the quality of your writing. There are no significant spelling errors, and your word choices are generally accurate, which ensures that your message is conveyed without any confusion or difficulty for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and compound sentences, which is sufficient for this task. Most of your sentences are grammatically accurate, and your meaning is always clear. There are occasional minor errors, such as 'I hope life treats you well' (which is slightly unnatural in this context) and 'I hope you add this dish to the food event' (which could be more formally phrased as 'I hope you will consider including...'). You have good control over basic structures, but you should aim to incorporate more complex sentence structures, such as conditional or relative clauses, to demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
