Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

To celebrate Popular recipes from seven different continents will be a great initiative to bring all the international students together. I would recommend getting more feedback on our official page. This will make sure, involvement of everyone. Moreover, it will be a great way to start the summer.

I have a suggestion regarding one of the best dish from my country with worldwide recognition. The name of the curry is Butter Paneer. It has a big following on the northern part of India. It ranked top in one of the survey done across the country.

It is prepared by chopping off the cheese curds and mixed with the gravy. With all the spices added to it makes it even more tasty and delicious.

This dish is renowned even in some parts of south asia. Not only, we have a large number of Indian Students but also, we have considerable percentage of students from countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh. Hence, it would be a great idea to include it.

Overall, I am sure that this event will be a great success.

Yours Faithfully,

Yash Mehta.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, described it, and provided a clear rationale for its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the description of the dish is quite brief and could be more vivid to entice the reader. Additionally, the opening paragraph is slightly disconnected from the main purpose of the letter, as it focuses on general event feedback rather than the specific request to contribute a dish. To reach a higher band, ensure that every sentence directly supports the primary purpose of your correspondence.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Hence', and 'Not only... but also' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly awkward, such as the opening sentence which is a sentence fragment ('To celebrate Popular recipes...'). The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between the introductory remarks and the specific offer could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'worldwide recognition', 'renowned', and 'initiative'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'chopping off the cheese curds' (which sounds unnatural in a culinary context) and 'a big following' (which is slightly informal). You also have some minor errors in phrasing, such as 'one of the best dish' (should be 'dishes'). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, incorporating more precise culinary terminology or more sophisticated collocations would help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as the fragment in the first paragraph ('To celebrate... will be a great initiative'), subject-verb agreement issues ('one of the best dish'), and punctuation errors (e.g., the unnecessary comma after 'Not only'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to indicate a lack of full control over complex structures. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and avoiding sentence fragments will significantly improve your accuracy.
