Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Luis,
Hope you are doing well. Myself Dhayanvi, member of an International students club. I really want to participate in this popular food event. the food item which i want to highlight in this is from India. Named as 'Samosa'.
Samosa is famous at every corner of the Indian streets. There are different kinds of it with various stuffing, which is its speciallity. My menu will be example, Potato samosa, chicken samosa, corn and spinach samosa and noodle samosa. People will be amazed to eat it with variety of condiments served with it. Sauces like mint and tamarind sauce which is famous in India.
The reason that samosa should be included on this popular food celebration is because i have seen many other countries like south Africans, Chinese and other cultural people do know samosas. but i want to let them know how samosa is originated from India and how do we actually eat it.
Hope this finds you well and i would like to answer if any question arises from this food.
Yours Truely
dhayanvi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a club member. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why the dish should be included is a bit repetitive and lacks depth regarding the cultural significance or the specific appeal to the club members. While the task is fully addressed, the ideas could be expanded with more sophisticated reasoning to reach a higher band. The structure is clear, and the purpose of the letter is evident from the start.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the description and finally the justification. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Phrases like 'The reason that' and 'My menu will be example' are slightly awkward and could be replaced with more natural transitions. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the dish and its components effectively. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'condiments' and 'originated', which is positive. However, there are several word-choice errors and spelling mistakes, such as 'speciallity' (specialty) and 'Yours Truely' (Truly). Additionally, the phrasing 'Myself Dhayanvi' is grammatically incorrect and informal. To improve, the student should focus on more precise collocations and ensure accurate spelling of common terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the food item', 'the event'), subject-verb agreement, and sentence fragments ('Named as Samosa'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some sentences lacking proper capitalization or ending with incorrect punctuation. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while focusing on basic grammatical accuracy would be beneficial.
