Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I’m member of international student’s club for last 6 months. I’m writing you to give a suggestion about the best dish from my country.

As you know, I’m from India. India is diverse country. There are variety of dishes are available in India. So, I would like to give you suggestion on one dish from my country and this dish you have to include in the event is, none other than “Undhiyu Puri”. In my country, people eat this dish during Uttrayan. This festival is for two days. People eat this dish and enjoy this festival and food too. However, this undhiyu contains all kind of vegetables likewise potato, brinjal, tomato, onion, garlic and many more. Firstly, we boil this together and then mix it in a big container with spices and specially add sugar. We eat this with puri and Jalebi.

This dish present unity how all vegetables will included in one container and process it and then make fantastic dish. This also shows unity between human beings and our love for this dish. We eat this dish every year in winter.

I hope you like my suggestion and you will include this tasty dish in event. Looking forward to your answer.

Kind regards,

Dhruvi.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a club member. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. While you describe the ingredients of 'Undhiyu Puri', the explanation of why it should be included is a bit repetitive and relies on a metaphorical argument about unity rather than focusing on the practical appeal of the dish for an international event. To improve, ensure your reasons for inclusion are more persuasive and directly related to the event's goal of celebrating global food.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'However' and 'Firstly'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the transition between the description of the dish and the explanation of its significance is abrupt. The use of referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'This dish present unity how all vegetables will included...', which lacks the necessary connecting words to make the logic smooth. Improving the variety of linking words would help your writing feel more natural.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas clearly, such as 'diverse', 'container', and 'festival'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'give you suggestion' instead of 'make a suggestion' and 'process it' which is used awkwardly. You also repeat the word 'dish' frequently. To reach a higher band, try to use more precise synonyms and pay closer attention to how words are combined in English (collocations). For example, instead of saying 'give a suggestion', you could use 'propose' or 'recommend'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

Your writing shows a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Common issues include missing articles ('I’m member of international student’s club'), subject-verb agreement ('There are variety of dishes are available'), and tense inconsistencies. Some sentences are also fragmented or lack necessary prepositions, such as 'This dish present unity how all vegetables will included'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency of the text. Focusing on basic article usage and verb forms will significantly improve your score.
