Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
I am writing to let you know that I would like to be a part of the event, which celebrate famous cuisines from the worldwide, conducted by the International Students club.
I am a member of this club, and when I heard of this program I was thrilled to introduce one of our popular dish namely Chicken Biriyani. This food is well known in India
The biriyani is a rice dish. It features spiced chicken and long-grain basmati rice cooked together with herbs, warm spices and yogurt. It is flavorful and rich in taste. This dish has different recipes, but I will make a authentic hyderbadi style. This style has a separate fan favorite,
Can you please add this food in the event because most of our members will like this food and the students from my country will have chance to refresh their taste.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely
Jeya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation of why the dish should be included is quite brief and could be expanded with more detail about the cultural significance or the sensory experience of the food to better engage the reader. The response is clear and the purpose is well-defined throughout the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical structure, with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used, though the transition between the description of the dish and the request to include it is a bit abrupt. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'This style' and 'because', but the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect your ideas more fluidly. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly disconnected from one another.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'cuisines', 'long-grain basmati rice', and 'authentic'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'from the worldwide' (should be 'from around the world') and 'namely Chicken Biriyani' (which is slightly unnatural in this context). There are also minor spelling errors like 'hyderbadi' (should be 'Hyderabadi'). To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring accurate spelling of proper nouns.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'which celebrate' (should be 'which celebrates') and 'one of our popular dish' (should be 'dishes'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some issues with sentence boundaries, such as the run-on sentence 'This style has a separate fan favorite, Can you please...'. Improving your control over subject-verb agreement and punctuation would significantly enhance the quality of your writing.
