Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Luis,
I am writing to express my suggestion regarding famous food of my country, India, for an international event that will be held by our club next month.
I would like to make channa masala, which is a popular and traditional Indian dish. It is a completely vegetarian dish along with a rich and delicious flavor.
Channa masala is made with chichpeas by using distinct ingredients, including onions, tomatoes, garlic, ginger, and spices. It is served with rice, bread, and amritsari kulcha.
I believe this dish should be included in the event because it will give people an opportunity to experience something new, and they can enjoy it. In addition, it is healthy and nutritious for many people. Its unique taste and colorful appearance would also add variety to the food festival.
I would be delighted to prepare and bring it for the event. Please let me know if you need any further information regarding this dish.
Yours sincerely,
Harpreet Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, described it as a vegetarian meal made with chickpeas and spices, and provided logical reasons for its inclusion, such as its health benefits and unique cultural appeal. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, maintaining a polite and helpful register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of an international food event. You have fully met the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is well-organised with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which makes the information easy to follow. You have used cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'because' to link your ideas effectively. The transition between the description of the dish and the justification for its inclusion is smooth. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure is coherent, ensuring that the reader can easily understand your intentions.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Words like 'traditional', 'nutritious', and 'appearance' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and appropriate, it is mostly standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items related to food and cultural events. For instance, instead of 'famous food', you could use 'culinary specialty'. There are no spelling errors, and the word choice is consistently natural and precise enough for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
Your grammar is generally accurate, and you have used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, 'I believe this dish should be included in the event because it will give people an opportunity to experience something new' is a well-constructed complex sentence. There are very few errors, and those that exist do not impede communication. Your control over punctuation and sentence boundaries is good. To improve further, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice constructions, to demonstrate greater grammatical flexibility.
