Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing this letter in regards to the occasion that we are hosting on August 29, 2026 for renowned cuisines from all over the globe.

I would like to suggest one widely accepted dish from my country that is enjoyed at almost each and every celebration. The name of the dish is "Rice Pudding" consists of rice, milk and sugar. It takes around 1-2 hours to cook and decorated with dry fruits.

In my opinion, this delicacy would be the perfect choice for this occasion as people can enjoy it as a dessert. It is not only delicious but also have nutritional value due to having dry fruits and milk which provides immense energy. Additionally, this dish will represent the traditional aspect of India and most of the students belongs to diverse countries , they will get an opportunity to taste something new and refreshing.

I look forward to receiving your response.

Yours sincerely,

Rajpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, described it as a rice-based dessert with dry fruits, and provided logical reasons for its inclusion, such as its nutritional value and cultural representation. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the 'why' by explaining how the dish might foster cultural exchange among students, which would add more depth to your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In my opinion', 'Additionally', and 'not only... but also' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the description of the dish and the reasons for its inclusion could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single clear theme and use a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'renowned cuisines', 'widely accepted', and 'delicacy' are used effectively. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'each and every celebration' (a bit informal) and 'most of the students belongs' (subject-verb agreement error). To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic or formal vocabulary and ensure that your word choices are consistently natural in a formal context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of your writing. For example, 'The name of the dish is "Rice Pudding" consists of...' is a run-on/fragment error; it should be 'The dish, which is called Rice Pudding, consists of...'. Additionally, there is a subject-verb agreement error in 'most of the students belongs'. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and sentence structure will help you achieve a higher score.
