Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to seek permission to prepare a popular cuisine from my country, I believe would be an excellent addition to the celebration.

As a member of the International Students' Club, I would like to offer to make a famous dish from my country, namely Chicken Biryani at the international food event. It is a favourite among a large number of people nationwide.

About the cuisine, it is prepared by cooking a large portion of rice mixed with chicken. In addition, traditional spices such as cardamom, cloves, cumin seeds, bay leaf, etc., are added to spark up the flavour of the dish. It is usually served with a small portion of curd and chicken curry.

The primary reason to add the dish to the list is because it is one of the top three food items consumed by the local population. Moreover, it can gain more popularity worldwide via the global food event platform, and there would be enjoy discovering a traditional Pakistani dish and learning about its cultural significance.

I hope you will consider my request. In case more information is required, feel free to contact me.

Your's sincerely,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, described Chicken Biryani, and provided a logical reason for its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the description of the ingredients and the cultural significance of the dish. You have maintained a consistent focus on the task throughout the letter, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the opening paragraph. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening sentence is grammatically sound, as the current structure is slightly fragmented.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which makes the information easy to follow. You have used cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'The primary reason' to connect your thoughts effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Overall, the structure supports the message well and ensures the reader can follow your argument without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'cultural significance', 'nationwide', and 'traditional spices' appropriately. The language is natural and fits the context of a food event well. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To improve further, try to incorporate more precise collocations or less common lexical items to add variety. For example, instead of 'spark up the flavour', you could use 'enhance the flavour profile'. Your spelling is accurate throughout the response, which contributes to the overall clarity of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free. However, there are a few minor slips, such as the comma splice in the first sentence ('...my country, I believe...') and the incorrect possessive form 'Your's' in the closing. These are minor errors that do not hinder understanding. To achieve a higher band, focus on ensuring that complex sentences are punctuated correctly and that possessive pronouns are used without apostrophes. Your control of verb tenses and subject-verb agreement is generally strong.
