Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this to express an interest in the event to celebrate popular food around the world. hosted by International Student's Club.
The Indian cuisine is known for the flavor and spices. I would like to represent a well known street food from my country. The name of the dish is Pav-Bhaji. Each part of the country has their own famous food item. Hence, the Pav Bhaji is universal. It is a spicy mixture of variety of vegetables. In this , the steamed vegetables are being cooked along with spices on slow flame. It is served with plain bread on the side.
In my opinion, the dish should be the part of event. It contains all the spices which is part of Indian food. It is the most loved street food in our country. As we have multicultural students, this element of India might can become a popular. I am pretty sure that, it will be a star of the event.
I would request you to give a thought about it.
Regards,
Hardi Thakar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, described it as a spicy vegetable mixture served with bread, and explained its cultural significance as a popular street food. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. To improve, ensure that your explanations are slightly more detailed; for instance, you could elaborate on why the specific combination of spices or the preparation method makes it a unique addition to an international food event. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'Hence' and 'In my opinion' to link your thoughts. However, the transition between sentences could be smoother; for example, the jump from describing the dish to explaining why it should be included could be better connected with more varied linking words. Paragraphing is used correctly, and the overall structure is coherent.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'cuisine', 'multicultural', and 'universal'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'might can become a popular', which is grammatically awkward, and 'the part of event' which is missing an article. While you successfully convey your message, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. For example, instead of saying 'well known', you could use 'renowned' or 'iconic' to add more variety to your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'might can become' (a double modal error), 'the part of event' (missing article), and 'the Indian cuisine' (unnecessary article). Additionally, there are some punctuation issues, such as the space before the comma in 'Hence, the Pav Bhaji'. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as these are recurring issues throughout your letter.
