Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing this letter for the upcoming event to celebrate popular foods from around the world.

As a member of International Student's club, I would like to contribute to the event as well. Hence, I am excited to make a famous dish from our country India, called 'Samosas'.

The reason I chose Samosa is because it is one of the main go to snack for any event in our country. Be it birthday parties, weddings, religious offerings, or just a light breakfast in a hurry. Samosas are one of the main dishes that just can't be afforded to forget about.

It is made up of a flour dough with potato fillings which are then deep fried or air fried after giving them a pyramid like shape.

Please let me know if I can proceed with my idea of presenting Samosas from India so that I can make the necessary arrangements beforehand.

Thank you very much.

Yours faithfully,

Saneha Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, provided a description of the samosa, and explained its cultural significance and popularity. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands exactly what you are proposing and why it is a suitable addition to the international food event. The letter follows the required format and maintains a consistent purpose throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Hence', 'The reason I chose...', and 'Be it...', which help link your sentences. However, the paragraphing could be slightly more refined to separate the description of the dish from the explanation of why it should be included. Overall, the flow of information is smooth and the message is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'religious offerings', 'flour dough', and 'necessary arrangements' are used accurately. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'main go to snack' (which is slightly informal) and 'can't be afforded to forget about' (which is a bit clunky). However, these do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise adjectives or idiomatic expressions that sound more natural in a formal or semi-formal context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound. There are a few minor errors, such as 'International Student's club' (should be 'International Students' club') and the phrasing 'can't be afforded to forget about', which is grammatically awkward. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the letter is easy to read. The majority of your sentences are error-free, which indicates a solid grasp of English grammar, though a few more complex structures could be used to demonstrate greater flexibility.
