Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Luis,

I am a proud member of our International Students Club. The club is going to organise an event to celebrate different cultural foods from around the world. I am writing this letter to request that I be allowed to cook a famous dish from my home country named 'Sarsoo Da Saag'.

This dish is a speciality from northern India. This dish is made of all green vegetables; first, we use spinach, then boil it for 10 minutes. After that, the spinach cooks in a pressure cooker along with spices and ginger paste. It can be served along with handmade wheat flatbread.

Moreover, it has a history of more than 1000 years; when humans were looking for an iron-rich nutritional food, it became a source of it. During the farmers' season, when they are ready to cut the crops in India, it is served with butter to buyers of crops.

It would be appreciated if this dish could be served at our upcoming event. I would love to provide samples to our organisers with its nutritional benefits.

Sincerely,

Nakul

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, provided a descriptive explanation of 'Sarsoo Da Saag', and justified its inclusion by highlighting its historical and nutritional value. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. To reach a higher band, you could have expanded slightly more on the 'why'—for example, by explaining how the dish would specifically enhance the cultural diversity of the event or appeal to the student body's palate. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'After that', and 'first', which help link your sentences. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences is more natural. For instance, the transition between the description of the dish and its history could be smoother to better connect the two ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'iron-rich nutritional food' and 'speciality from northern India' are effective. However, there is some repetition of basic words, such as 'dish' and 'cook'. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise synonyms or topic-specific vocabulary related to food and cultural events. For example, instead of saying 'cook a famous dish', you could use 'prepare a traditional delicacy'. The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good control of basic grammar and make an attempt at complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to understand. There are some minor errors, such as 'when humans were looking for an iron-rich nutritional food' (which is slightly awkward) and 'provide samples to our organisers with its nutritional benefits' (where the preposition 'with' is slightly confusing). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the writing from being fully error-free. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures and refining your use of prepositions would help improve your score.
