Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Luis,

I am a member of an International Students’ Club in my college and recently, I heard about an event being organized to celebrate the famous food of one’s own country and I would definitely love to be a part of this inspirational journey to showcase my culinary skills.

I would love to make this popular Indian dish called Butter Chicken which is a blend of spicy, tangy, sweet and salty mixture altogether. It starts with the tandoori marination of chicken which is then kept overnight in the refrigerator for the flavours to absorb in.

Next, a variety of vegetables are then tossed in oil and turned into a fine puree. The chicken is then fried, baked and charred on coal and finally both these things are tossed in butter and garnished with cream and coriander.

As we have a lot of Indian students on our campus and as it would be a novelty for our foreign staff too so, I would request you kindly to let me be a part of this event as it would give a different and unique taste for my foreign friends cherished forever.

Hope to get a prompt and an affirmative response from you as it would be a depiction of my cultural diversity towards my fellow students and seniors.

Yours sincerely,

Iqra !

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points of the task. You clearly offered to make a dish, provided a descriptive explanation of the preparation process, and justified its inclusion by highlighting the cultural diversity and the presence of Indian students on campus. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. You have maintained a consistent focus on the task requirements throughout the response, ensuring that the reader understands both the nature of the dish and the rationale for its inclusion in the international food event.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a specific purpose, moving from the introduction to the dish description, the preparation method, and finally the justification. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'Next', 'finally', and 'as we have', which help the flow of the text. However, some transitions could be more sophisticated to reach a higher band. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is easy to follow, ensuring that the reader can navigate the information without confusion. The use of referencing is generally clear throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have demonstrated a good range of vocabulary, including terms like 'culinary skills', 'marination', 'novelty', and 'cultural diversity'. These choices are appropriate for the context and help to convey your message effectively. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'mixture altogether' which is slightly redundant, and 'depiction of my cultural diversity towards my fellow students', which is a bit awkward in its phrasing. However, these errors do not impede communication. You have shown an ability to use topic-specific vocabulary related to food preparation, which adds depth to your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You have used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the majority of your sentences are clear, there are some grammatical slips. For example, 'the flavours to absorb in' should be 'the flavours to be absorbed', and 'both these things are tossed' is slightly informal. Additionally, the sentence starting with 'As we have...' is quite long and slightly run-on in its construction. Despite these occasional errors, your meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate. You have demonstrated sufficient control over grammar to ensure that the reader is not distracted by the minor inaccuracies present.
