Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to express my interest about the recent event which is being held to celebrate the famous cuisines from around the world.

I would like to prepare a particularly popular sweet dish in the Gujarati cuisine called "Rabdi" for the event. This food item made from milk is loved by many Indians. It is made by boiling the milk at a low flame for a few hours. Once the milk gains a thick consistency, other ingredients like sugar, cashews and chopped up almonds are added, making it rich in flavor.

I believe this food item should be a part of the event as it holds a great cultural significance for Indians. Rabdi is served as a dessert in every major festivities and rituals. Hence, if it is included, others would be able to enjoy this delicacy and appreciate the nuances of the Indian as well as the Gujarati culture.

It would mean a great deal to me if you would consider this suggestion. I look forward to your response and opinion on this matter.

Best,

Jane.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have fully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make 'Rabdi', provided a descriptive explanation of the preparation process, and gave a logical reason for its inclusion based on cultural significance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of an international students' club event.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which aids readability. You use cohesive devices such as 'Once', 'Hence', and 'as it holds' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is smooth, moving from the offer to the description and finally the justification. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter format.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'consistency', 'delicacy', 'nuances', and 'significance'. These terms are used accurately and fit the context well. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. While the vocabulary is sufficient and natural, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions could elevate the response further. Overall, the language is precise and appropriate for the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, 'Once the milk gains a thick consistency, other ingredients... are added' shows good control over complex sentence construction. There are minor slips, such as 'interest about' (should be 'interest in') and 'in every major festivities' (should be 'in every major festivity' or 'during all major festivities'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not interfere with the clarity of your message. The majority of your sentences are error-free.
