Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Luis,
I am writing this letter with regards to next month's food festival. I want to let you know that I am willing to take part in it and represent my culture.
Since our club is hosting an international food event, I was wondering if it would be a good idea for me to represent my hometown, Iran, and prepare one of our traditional dishes for this festival.
There are plethora of dishes to choose from and I would like to go with my favourite one, "Ash reshte", which is translated to "Noodle Soup". It contains fresh vegetables, beans, a special noodle and a sour dairy product. It is extremely nutritious and in nothing like any other noodle soup that you have tasted before. It especially goes well with the current season, as it's extremely cold and this dish will warm you from inside out.
I have seen our cuisine being represented in such events, but my countryman usually go for kebab, which are tasty, however, I think Ash requires proper recognition as well. Since everyone is presenting their culture this soup is an important aspect of Iranian food culture.
I am looking forward to your response to see if you have any suggestions for me to take into consideration.
Yours Sincerely,
Thor

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to prepare a dish, provided a descriptive overview of 'Ash reshte', and offered a logical justification for its inclusion, specifically highlighting its cultural significance and suitability for the season. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, maintaining a polite and professional register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of an international students' club event. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction to the proposal, the description of the dish, the justification, and finally the closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Since', 'however', and 'as' effectively to link your thoughts. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall readability of the letter. The flow of information is smooth, and the relationship between the ideas is easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'plethora', 'traditional', 'nutritious', and 'recognition'. These choices are generally accurate and appropriate for the context. There are a few minor issues, such as 'in nothing like' (which should be 'is nothing like') and 'my countryman' (which should be 'my countrymen'). However, these do not impede communication. You show an ability to use less common items, which helps to convey your message with precision and style. Overall, your lexical range is sufficient to express your ideas clearly and effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I was wondering if it would be a good idea...' and 'Since everyone is presenting their culture, this soup is an important aspect...'. While there are a few minor grammatical slips, such as the missing verb 'is' in 'it is nothing like' and the pluralisation error in 'my countryman', the majority of your sentences are error-free. Your control over punctuation and sentence construction is generally strong, and your meaning is always clear to the reader.
