Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

Hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my keen interest to participate in our upcoming event where we celebrate different cuisines from all over the world.

I would like to offer an incredible food from India, name Dosa for this event. Dosa is a traditional fermented food made up of rice and lentils for over 100 of years in India. It is a crispy thin layer of one sided cooked sheet wrapped with some vegetables in it. This dish is not only does health benefit but also reminds culture to people come from Indian sub-continent.

In this event, if we include this dish in our menu then it would definitely be an attraction for every one. Its mild and unique of combination of spices make it perfect for all the international guests coming from different countries. Additionally, there would be a cuisine from southern part of India.

Please let me confirm about this idea so that I could make essential arrangement for preparing this meal for our guests on event day.

Thanks and regards

Ash

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, described it, and provided a clear rationale for its inclusion in the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the description of the dish could be slightly more refined to ensure the reader fully understands the preparation. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organised with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'In this event' to link your thoughts. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that pronouns clearly refer back to the intended nouns to avoid minor ambiguity.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'keen interest' and 'traditional fermented food' are used effectively. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'incredible food' (should be 'an incredible dish') and 'reminds culture' (should be 'reminds people of their culture'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise word selection. Expanding your vocabulary to include more specific culinary terms would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'name Dosa' (should be 'named Dosa'), 'for over 100 of years' (should be 'for over 100 years'), and 'This dish is not only does health benefit' (should be 'This dish not only provides health benefits'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
