Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Luis,

I hope you are doing well. I'm excited and thrilled to participate in the upcoming event, and I would be glad to present a dish from India on that day.

I was eagerly waiting for this moment to showcase the quality of dishes that people in my country make, such as biryani and butter chicken. However, biryani is the most favorite meal where foreigners also consume it without any difficulties. Hence, from my end, I will be happy to present this dish at the event.

Talking about the dish, it consists of rice on top and at the bottom it presents the spicy flavour constituted from mixed spices, which are renowned in India. Moreover, it will also be supplied with a curd mix that will enhance its taste. Consequently, I am confident that the majority of them will enjoy it.

There is a special reason to include this in the event, especially the taste, which is unique, where both rice and masala will be mixed to provide the end result. Furthermore, I have observed many people throughout the globe when they come to India, visit my city to have biryani, and they have, they also embraced the taste on social media.

I hope you consider my request and assist me in providing a valuable experience to all the members. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Rayan Akhtar.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, described it, and provided a logical reason for its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the description of the dish and the justification for its popularity. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of why the dish should be included is more focused on the event's specific goal of celebrating global food, rather than just general popularity.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph has a central theme, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Consequently', and 'Furthermore' to link your sentences. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Improving the variety of these connectors and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'the majority of them') is always precise will help you achieve a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'showcase the quality of dishes' and 'embraced the taste' are effective. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'constituted from' (which is slightly unnatural in this context) and 'the majority of them will enjoy it' (where 'them' lacks a clear antecedent). Expanding your use of more precise culinary or descriptive adjectives would strengthen your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to understand. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the most favorite meal where foreigners also consume it' (which is slightly awkward) and the repetitive structure in 'they have, they also embraced'. Despite these minor errors, your meaning is never obscured, and your control over punctuation and sentence construction is generally good.
