Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to offer my help with the upcoming food event organized by the international student's club. I would be delighted to prepare a popular Pakistani dish called biryani.

Biryani is a traditional rice dish that is very popular throughout Pakistan. It is made with basmati rice, chicken or meat, and tomatoes and fresh herbs, which give it a rich flavor and pleasant aroma. I can prepare a chicken version of the dish and make it suitable for people who prefer mild or medium spicy food.

I believe biryani would be an excellent choice for the event because it represents an important part of Pakistani culture. Students from other countries would have the opportunity to experience a new and delicious flavors.

Moreover, it can be prepared in a large quantity, so it would be suitable for many participants.

I would be happy to prepare the dish myself and bring it to the event. Please let me know if you need any further information.

I look forward to hearing from you.

best wishes,

Zainab Ahmad

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly offer to make biryani, provide a descriptive overview of its ingredients and flavor profile, and offer logical reasons for its inclusion, such as its cultural significance and suitability for large groups. The tone is consistently appropriate for a letter to an event organizer, maintaining a polite and helpful register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, ensuring the reader understands both the nature of the dish and your motivation for contributing. No parts of the task are omitted, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the opening sentence.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is well-organized with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from the offer to the description, then to the justification, and finally to the closing. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Moreover' to add information and 'because' to provide reasoning. The transition between paragraphs is natural, and the overall structure is easy to follow. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and there is a clear sense of flow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for this task. Phrases like 'pleasant aroma', 'rich flavor', and 'cultural significance' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is generally precise, there is a minor error in 'a new and delicious flavors', where the article 'a' should not precede the plural noun 'flavors'. Despite this, the language is natural and conveys your message effectively. You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to express your ideas clearly and with some flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The letter displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally strong. There is a minor punctuation error in the opening sentence ('student's club' should be 'students' club' as it refers to international students in general). Additionally, the aforementioned article error ('a new and delicious flavors') is a minor slip. These errors are infrequent and do not impede communication in any way. You show a good command of tense and structure throughout the response.
