Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Luis,
I am writing to offer a famous dish in my country at the upcoming food festival being organised by our club.
The name of the dish is chicken Biryani which is a signature food item of my place. It is made of organic rice, chicken and all the natural spices from farms. The smell and taste of the item will be top-notch, leaving the taste buds craving for more.
In view of this, I am willing to include it in the event because many of the club members previously asked me to make them taste this lip-smacking item. Moreover, it would be a great addition as the main course meal in the event because of its palate-satisfying nature. I would be very happy to add that from my side in the menu. Can't wait to give a sumptuous meal at the event.
Thanks for your time and understanding
Looking forward to your reply.
Regards,
Writer

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, provided a description of the chicken Biryani, and explained why it should be included in the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, maintaining a friendly and professional register throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands both the nature of the dish and the rationale for its inclusion. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific detail about the cultural significance of the dish to further extend your ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use paragraphing effectively to separate the different points of the task. Cohesive devices such as 'In view of this', 'Moreover', and 'because' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the letter flows well from the initial offer to the final closing. To improve, try to vary your linking words further to ensure the flow feels more natural and less reliant on standard conjunctions.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, including some descriptive and idiomatic expressions such as 'signature food item', 'top-notch', 'lip-smacking', and 'palate-satisfying'. These choices show an attempt to use less common lexical items to convey your message effectively. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. While the vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or academic-style descriptors would help elevate the response to a higher band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally good. There are minor issues, such as 'offer a famous dish in my country' (which would be better as 'offer to prepare a famous dish from my country') and 'add that from my side in the menu' (which is slightly unnatural). However, these errors do not impede communication. To improve, focus on refining prepositions and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with complete accuracy.
