Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing this letter to offer to make a delicious popular dish from my country in our food fest. As you know Indian cuisine is really popular for having various traditional dishes. Although it is at the very last moment, I would love for everyone to try something that I really like.

The dish I want to make is Gulab Jamun, and it is really famous traditional Indian dessert. Especially because it is really sweet and warm. It is sweet dumplings made out of semolina and then fried and soaked in sugar syrup.

The reason I want to include this in the fest because of it's similarity with Tim bits. As you know it is really famous sweet treat in Canada, I would love everyone to try something that is so similar. Gulab jamun is not only a sweet treat, but also a comfort food that we had during our childhood. This will be my way to make people try some nostalgic food from India.

Let me know if the committee approves my proposal.

Best regards,

PP

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, provided a descriptive explanation of what Gulab Jamun is, and gave a logical reason for its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a club member. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanations are slightly more detailed; for instance, you could elaborate more on the cultural significance of the dish beyond just its similarity to Tim bits to fully develop your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Although' and 'Not only... but also', which help the flow. However, the transition between the description of the dish and the reason for its inclusion could be smoother. Additionally, ensure that your paragraphing is consistent to maintain a professional structure throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'cuisine', 'semolina', and 'nostalgic'. However, there is some repetition of simple words like 'really' and 'sweet'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise adjectives or adverbs to describe the food and your enthusiasm. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'food fest' (which is slightly informal) and 'it's' (which should be the possessive 'its'). Expanding your range of descriptive language will help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. However, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'it is really famous traditional Indian dessert' (missing an article) and 'the reason I want to include this in the fest because of...' (which is a fragmented structure). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band. Focus on proofreading for articles, subject-verb agreement, and sentence completeness to improve your accuracy.
