Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Luis,
formal
suggest/permission/request
I am writing to enquire if i can add the national dish of my country to the menu of International Student's Club "Cuisines from around the World" event. I regret that I am not a part of the organizing team as I missed the deadline for application due to my final exams. So I want to participate in the event by presenting a dish from my hometown.
I am from Lahore, Pakistan and the national dish of my country is Nihari. It is a meat curry commonly prepared with Mutton or Beef. It is the juicy and tender meat that makes it standout. Apart from that the curry is also extremely flavorful because of the spices.
I went through the list of cuisines for the event and discovered that there was not a single dish from Pakistan. I believe it is a delicious and unique dish which is not only popular in my country but I have also watched foreigners also enjoy eating it when they visit.
I request you to include it in the event and will look forward to your response.
Kind Regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly offer to make a dish, describe it as a meat curry made with mutton or beef, and provide a logical reason for its inclusion, noting the absence of Pakistani cuisine in the current list. The tone is appropriate for a request to an event organizer. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Apart from that' and 'I believe', although the flow could be further improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points of the letter, and the overall progression of ideas is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enquire', 'national dish', and 'flavorful' effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'standout' (which should be two words as a verb phrase: 'stand out') and the slightly repetitive use of 'dish'. However, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and accurately. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise adjectives or idiomatic expressions related to food and cultural events.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the majority of sentences are clear, there are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'I have also watched foreigners also enjoy' (redundant 'also') and 'I am not a part of the organizing team' (should be 'part of the organizing team'). Punctuation is generally correct, though the inclusion of 'formal' and 'suggest/permission/request' at the beginning of your text is unnecessary and slightly distracting. Overall, your grammar is accurate enough that it does not impede communication.
