Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
Greetings of the day. I hope this letter finds you in the best of health and spirits. I am writing to express my suggestion of adding Samosa Chatt in an upcoming event.
I wish to add Samosa Chatt in the food menu because the majority of international students belong to India. Since this dish is one of the popular dishes in India, it will attract many students to have it without any second thought. Moreover, this is delicious food that everyone apart from Indian students, will like to taste.
While preparation of the main ingredient will take some time to get ready, it is quite a quick process to fry it in a deep oil fryer or in an air fryer. The main ingredients include mesh potatoes with some mixed spices like salt, red chilli and green chilli. This stuff is then covered by a flour dove and directly put in deep oil for 5 minutes.
The purpose of putting this dish is that there are many students who are not able to make this food by themselves at home because of high time consumption. Furthermore, there are some students who will appreciate us for serving samosa chaat because it will make a nostalgic connection inside them, when they eat it.
I hope you will consider my request for it. If you need any more information about this, I am willing to provide it to the best of my knowledge.
Yours Sincerely,
Manpreet Singh Bawa

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make Samosa Chaat, provided a clear description of the dish, and explained its significance for the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organizer. However, the development of ideas could be more precise. For instance, the explanation of why it should be included focuses heavily on nostalgia and convenience, which is good, but could be further strengthened by emphasizing the cultural diversity aspect of the event. Overall, the response is well-focused and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction to the description and the rationale. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'While', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the preparation process and the rationale for inclusion is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring they are used naturally would help elevate the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using specific terms like 'nostalgic connection' and 'main ingredients'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'mesh potatoes' (should be 'mashed potatoes') and 'flour dove' (should be 'dough'). Additionally, phrases like 'putting this dish' could be replaced with more precise academic or formal alternatives like 'proposing this dish' or 'including this item'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate that your lexical range is currently at a functional level rather than a sophisticated one.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the majority of international students belong to India' (which is a generalization that might be better phrased as 'a significant number of students') and 'everyone apart from Indian students, will like to taste' (incorrect comma usage). You also have some minor tense and article inconsistencies. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of articles and punctuation in complex sentences.
