Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to request you to include one of the popular dish from my home country in the event.

There are so many famous dishes across the globe, however I would like to make butter chicken, which is India's most incredible dish ever. It is available anywhere in India, as it is very popular. It contains lots of things such as, onion, garlic, some original ground ingredients, as well as chicken breast, which is the main part of the dish. It takes almost 1.5 to 2 hours to cook, and once it is done then, it will be served with rice.

I highly suggest you to include this dish, as it is internationally famous. There will be many Indian people, who will love it see their favorite dish at the special occasion. Additionally, other humans from different part of the world can also explore this dish and will remember as an Indian dish.

I look forward from hearing you, and exited to meet you at the event.

Your faithfully,

Jaimin Padhiyar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points of the task. You offered to make butter chicken, provided a description of the dish, and explained its suitability for the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. To reach a higher band, ensure your descriptions are more vivid and specific. For instance, instead of saying it contains 'lots of things', you could describe the rich, creamy tomato-based sauce or the specific spices used. This would provide more depth to your response and better demonstrate your ability to elaborate on ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'however', 'additionally', and 'as well as' to link your ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between sentences are smoother. For example, the transition between describing the ingredients and the cooking time is a bit abrupt. Overall, the message is easy to follow and the paragraphing is appropriate.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'internationally famous' and 'explore this dish'. However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'other humans' (which sounds unnatural; 'other guests' or 'attendees' would be better) and 'love it see' (which is a grammatical error affecting lexical flow). To improve, try to incorporate more precise adjectives and collocations related to food and cultural events to demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'one of the popular dish' (should be 'dishes'), 'love it see' (should be 'love to see'), and 'look forward from hearing you' (should be 'look forward to hearing from you'). Additionally, the closing 'Your faithfully' is incorrect; it should be 'Yours faithfully'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage to improve accuracy.
