Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I hope you are doing well. My name is Charmi Doshi . I am member of an International Students club. I saw a post in club's website for event of popular foods from across the world.

I love to do cooking because I used to go at cooking classes and also have certification from a famous chef from my country. I like to make a well known dish from my country (India) which is called as "Jalebi with Rabdi" in this club's event.

I am sharing with you a quick texture and taste of Jalebi and Rabdi. Jalebi is in round shape, color is orange which is comes from "Kesar" ingredient. Rabdi is made from milk and lots of dryfruits. Jalebi and Rabdi are sweet in taste and serve in one single plate along with rose petals in the top of jalebi.

This dish should be included in the event because of unique design and taste. Jalebi is soft and juicy and alongwith rabdi it makes dish smooth and healthy because of dryfruits. Mostly people will like to eat sweet so I think so people love this dish very much.

Waiting for your positive response.

Warm Regards,

Charmi Doshi.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, described it clearly, and provided a logical reason for its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. To reach a higher band, ensure that your descriptions are more precise; for example, while you mention the ingredients, explaining the cultural significance of the dish would have further developed your ideas. Overall, the task is fully addressed with a clear purpose throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'because of' and 'in addition to' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes slightly mechanical. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', or 'In terms of its presentation') to create a smoother progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the letter follows a standard, clear structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message effectively. You use some topic-specific terms like 'ingredient', 'certification', and 'dryfruits'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'do cooking' instead of 'cook' or 'in the top of' instead of 'on top of'. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and more sophisticated adjectives to describe food, which would help you move into the higher band range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles (e.g., 'in club's website' should be 'on the club's website') and verb forms (e.g., 'which is comes from' should be 'which comes from'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some inconsistencies with spacing and capitalization. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of definite and indefinite articles.
