Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I hope you are doing well. As you already know that there is an event to celebrate famous food from different countries being organized by our International Students' club. As a member of it, I would like to add a suggestion to include one of the most loved and popular dish from India.

Paavbhaji is one of the most eaten dish in India. I would really appreciate if we could add this dish in our menu. As you know there are a lot of Indian students that are going to attend this event. Additionally, I am pretty sure that people from other parts of the world will crave for it too.

One of the reasons that Indian parents also support this dish is it contains lots of vegetables in it. Basically, it is a combination of mashed vegetables after boiling them till cooked, then adding several spices to make it hot and the buns which are called paav in Hindi. I personally am a fan of this and that is the reason I want it to be included.

Yours faithfully,

Nilesh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, provided a clear description of Paavbhaji, and explained why it is a suitable addition to the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a club organizer. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the 'why' by linking the dish more explicitly to the theme of cultural celebration, perhaps mentioning how it represents Indian street food culture. Overall, the response is well-focused and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph has a central theme, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'One of the reasons', which help connect your sentences. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences is smoother. For example, the transition between describing the dish and explaining why you personally like it could be more fluid.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'International Students' club' and 'crave for it' are used appropriately. However, there are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'most eaten dish' (should be 'most popular' or 'most widely consumed') and 'add this dish in our menu' (should be 'to our menu'). You also repeat the word 'dish' several times. Using synonyms or rephrasing would demonstrate a more flexible range of vocabulary and help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical slips. For instance, 'As you already know that there is an event' is slightly awkward; 'As you know, there is an event' would be more natural. Additionally, 'I would really appreciate if we could add' requires 'it' (i.e., 'appreciate it if'). There are also minor errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'in our menu' instead of 'to our menu'. Despite these, the errors do not impede communication.
