Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Luis,

I am a member of the International Students’ Club and I am writing you formally to be a part of this event to showcase my culinary talent to my fellow counterparts.

I would love to prepare one of our famous dishes in India called, “Butter Chicken”, enjoyed by all age groups. It is an amalgamation of spicy, tangy, sweet and savoury flavours altogether.

It starts with the marination of chicken in tandoori spices kept overnight followed by a pureed blend of vegetables. Chicken is baked and fried and added to the buttery gravy of vegetables finished with a touch of heavy and fresh cream towards the end and garnished with coriander leaves.

I believe this dish deserves to be incorporated in this event as it would not only connect profoundly with my own countrymen but also many of my foreign colleagues and peers. It would serve the purpose of a novel variety along with its overseas courses.

I look forward to receiving an affirmative offer from your side.

Yours sincerely,

IQRA.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, provided a detailed description of 'Butter Chicken', and explained its significance for the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, although the opening sentence is slightly overly formal for a club setting. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the description of the cooking process, which adds depth to the response. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which makes the letter easy to follow. You have used some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'It starts with' and 'I believe this dish deserves'. However, the transition between the description of the dish and the explanation of why it should be included could be smoother. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is logical and consistent throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You have demonstrated a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'amalgamation', 'pureed', 'incorporated', and 'culinary talent'. These choices are precise and enhance the quality of your writing. There are no significant errors in word choice or spelling. While some phrases like 'affirmative offer' are slightly unnatural in this context, the overall lexical control is strong and allows for clear communication of your ideas. You show a good awareness of style appropriate for a formal request.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You have used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, the sentence 'It starts with the marination of chicken in tandoori spices kept overnight followed by a pureed blend of vegetables' is well-constructed. There are very few grammatical errors, and your control over punctuation is generally good. While there is a slight awkwardness in the phrasing 'writing you formally to be a part of this event', it does not impede meaning. The majority of your sentences are error-free, demonstrating a high level of grammatical accuracy.
