Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Luis,
My name Is Virat. I am one of the members of an international students' club. Today, i am writing this letter to give you suggestion for event.
Let me give you more detail regarding that. To begin, i heard that club is organizing an event in next two week to celebrate famous food from around the globe.
Here, i would like to give one well know dish from my country you should make as well for that function. It's call ' Vada Pav'. Let me describe this dish to you. In this, you need to make vada which is made with boiled potato and some Indian spices. After that you need to dipped that into gram floor and then deep fry at high temperature. Once that ready we need one spicey and mint chutney to spread on both side of bun. And finally we need to eat that.
I this we should this one for sure because as we have more individuals from India. Also, this comes in sandwich category and in the world its ranked on 10. So, i feel that other people will try this as well in this event.
I hope you like my recommendation and include this dish.
Yours faithfully,
Virat.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining why it should be included. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the description of the dish is quite procedural and could be more descriptive to entice the reader. Additionally, the explanation for why it should be included relies on a somewhat vague claim about its global ranking. To improve, try to provide more vivid details about the cultural significance or the unique flavor profile of the dish to better persuade the reader.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'To begin' and 'Also'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where the connection between ideas is weak, such as the transition into the description of the dish. The use of referencing is occasionally unclear, for example, 'In this, you need to make vada'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer to their antecedents would enhance the overall flow and coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'international students' club' and 'recommendation'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and minor errors, such as 'give you suggestion' (should be 'give you a suggestion') and 'gram floor' (should be 'gram flour'). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. To improve, focus on learning correct collocations for cooking processes and ensure you use the correct terminology for ingredients.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'i heard that club is organizing' (missing article 'the'), 'in next two week' (should be 'in the next two weeks'), and 'It's call' (should be 'It's called'). Additionally, there are issues with verb tense consistency and subject-verb agreement, such as 'we need one spicey and mint chutney'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the clarity of your message. Focusing on basic grammar rules, especially articles and verb forms, will significantly improve your score.
