Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

Hope you are doing great. In accordance with the cultural week, our international students' club is planning to organize an event to bring popular food across the world in one dinning table. In addition to the opportunity for everyone to try out new dishes, this also broadcasts the culture , preparation procedure and story behind each dish.

Our team is planning on selecting one group to represent each country and bring 1-2 popular foods from their country to avoid waste. However, there's strict restrictions on ingredients considering to the dietry restriction of every person attending the event. What I am planning to make to represent my country is Biriyani because the item itself is a single dish which does not need any additional add-ons required to complete the food. It has sweetness, sour and bitterness all in one making it the best choice because It represents India, and as my country with a wide spectrum of culture and heritage this food has immense varieties of flavours that blasts every taste buds in the tongue.

My team is excited and looking for the event to create new experiences and I hope you will enjoy that too with us

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make Biriyani, described its characteristics, and explained why it is a suitable choice for the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an organizer. However, the first two paragraphs contain information that is slightly tangential, such as the general planning of the club and the mention of dietary restrictions, which takes up space that could have been used to further elaborate on the dish itself. To reach a higher band, ensure that every sentence directly supports the specific requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices like 'In addition to' and 'However', which help the flow. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the connection between the general club planning and your specific offer could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, but ensure that each paragraph has a clear central theme to improve the overall structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'heritage', 'spectrum', and 'preparation procedure'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'dinning table' (should be 'dining table') and 'blasts every taste buds' (should be 'tantalizes the taste buds'). While you attempt to use more sophisticated language, some of these attempts result in slightly unnatural phrasing. Focusing on accurate collocations will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'there's strict restrictions' (should be 'there are'), 'considering to' (should be 'considering'), and 'looking for the event' (should be 'looking forward to'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and preposition usage to improve your accuracy.
