Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Luis,

I hope you are well? As an active member of the International Student Club, I'm writing to show my interest in preparing a well liked food from my country; Nigeria, at the oncoming event that celebrates popular food from different countries.

The dish I would like to make is called 'Ikokore' and it is from the Western part of Nigeria. It's a meal from Ijebu Ode, Ogun State to be precise. The local people of Ijebu eats this food with Eba and they take pride in it's preparation. This is because of the time it takes to prepare it is short.

Ikokore is made from water yam. After peeling the yam, then you blend till smooth with a blender and pour into a bowl. Put some water in the pot and boil, add 2 tablespoons of dry pepper and a pinch of salt and leave to cook for about two minutes. Mix the blended yam with it and add protein of choice. If the recipe is followed, within five minutes, the food is done. This food is one of the most famous dishes in Nigeria.

Personally, Ikokore should be included in the upcoming event because it is easy to prepare, delicious and tasty.

Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to your response.

Yours faithfully,

Natasha Adefala

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, provided a detailed description of 'Ikokore', and explained why it is a suitable addition to the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, maintaining a friendly yet professional register. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing enough detail for the reader to understand the cultural significance and the preparation process of the dish. You have fully met the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'This is because' and 'After peeling', to link your sentences. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly between sentences. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure is coherent throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. You use specific terms like 'water yam' and 'protein of choice' effectively. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'well liked food' (should be 'popular dish') and 'it's preparation' (the possessive 'its' should not have an apostrophe). While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items to describe the taste and cultural importance of the dish.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most of your sentences are clear, there are some grammatical slips. For example, 'I hope you are well?' should not have a question mark, and 'the time it takes to prepare it is short' is slightly awkward. You also have a few punctuation errors, such as the unnecessary semicolon after 'Nigeria'. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. Increasing your control over complex sentence structures will help improve your score in this area.
