Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing this letter to present one of the popular cuisine from India in our upcoming event where we are going to celebrate famous dishes from all around the world.

I would like to offer "Dosa", a traditional fermented food made up of soaked rice, originally originated from southern part of India, but now a popular dish in all over India. This dish comes with different stuffing such as meshed potatoes, vegetables and paneer. Usually it is served with a curry name "Samber", made up of lentils and vegetables. I can prepare Dosa with mesh potato stuffing and Samber, this is most commonly served in events.

As I mentioned this dish is a very popular among Indians, and in our event's guest list, there are majority of people are from Indian origin. If we add this dish in our menu, our guests might get the chance of eating authenticated, traditional south-Indian food.

Please let me confirm about your decision as soon as possible so that I can start my preparation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, provided a clear description of the Dosa, and explained its relevance to the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organizer. To improve, ensure you avoid minor inaccuracies such as stating 'one of the popular cuisine' (should be 'cuisines') and ensure your explanation of why it should be included is slightly more persuasive. Overall, the task is fulfilled clearly and effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for the description and justification, and a closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. You use some cohesive devices like 'As I mentioned' and 'If we add', which help the flow. However, some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. For example, the connection between the description of the dish and the offer to prepare it could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use specific terms like 'fermented', 'stuffing', and 'lentils'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'meshed potatoes' (should be 'mashed') and 'authenticated' (should be 'authentic'). Additionally, 'popular cuisine' should be pluralized. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent a higher score. Expanding your use of less common collocations would help elevate your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'originally originated' (redundant), 'in all over India' (should be 'all over India'), and 'there are majority of people are' (grammatically incorrect structure). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To reach a higher band, focus on reducing these small errors and ensuring subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout your writing.
