Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Luis,
I am writing this letter to offer to make a famous dish from my country as we celebrate popular food from around the world.
This dish would be chicken biryani as I belong to south Indian community. From vast scope of food varieties, It is prepared with ancient techniques to give an aromatic experience to the food. It contains lots of herbs and spices with tender pieces of chicken which is served with a vegetable stew called "salan". It also tastes better with "Rayta", a yogurt based side dish.
The reason, I want to include this delicacy in the event because it is the favourable dish by many
tourists not only the local folks. I knew that from the time when, I flown back to my home. I am pretty sure about this particular delicious rise based item benefits us to raise some Money for the our Club.
Thanks
Sonia

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of why the dish should be included is brief and relies on general statements about tourists and fundraising. To achieve a higher band, you could provide more specific details about how the dish would be prepared or why it would specifically appeal to the diverse student body at the club event.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body, and closing. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate. For instance, the transition 'From vast scope of food varieties' is slightly awkward, and the use of 'The reason, I want to include...' is grammatically incorrect and disrupts the flow. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words would help the text move more smoothly between sentences and ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, including specific terms like 'aromatic', 'delicacy', and 'yogurt-based'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'favourable dish' (should be 'favourite') and 'rise based item' (should be 'rice-based'). Additionally, 'local folks' is slightly informal for this context. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary and better attention to collocations to reach a higher band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include 'I flown back' (should be 'I flew back'), 'the our Club' (unnecessary article), and 'I knew that from the time when, I flown back' (incorrect comma usage and tense). While the meaning remains clear, these errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct verb tenses, and avoiding unnecessary articles or punctuation marks within sentences.
