Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
I am writing this letter regarding the upcoming event organised by International Student's club to celebrate well-liked cuisine around the world.
Firstly, I have a suggestion to include the most recognized dish from my country Canada called Poutine. It is the one of the most selling dish in all over Canada and loved by every age group. Moreover, It is easily made with only three major ingredients which makes it delicious and flavourful.
This dish is made with crispy French fries, cheese curds and gravy. The gravy is made of either beef base or vegetable base, according to the preference of consumer, but the traditional Poutine is made of beef gravy.
This should be included in an event because most of the students like to eat food which can be easily carried in hands and ready to eat.
I would appreciate it if you could take my suggestion. I look forward to your response.
Kind regards,
Shagun

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly offer to make Poutine, describe its ingredients, and provide a logical reason for its inclusion (portability and popularity). The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the cultural significance of the dish or provide more descriptive detail about why it would be a highlight of the event, rather than just focusing on its convenience. Overall, the task is fully addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'This should be included', which help guide the reader. However, the paragraphing is slightly disjointed; the description of the dish and the explanation for its inclusion could be better integrated. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Improving the flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'cuisine', 'recognized', 'ingredients', and 'flavourful'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'well-liked cuisine' (usually 'popular cuisine') and 'the one of the most selling dish' (should be 'one of the best-selling dishes'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and variety of less common lexical items that would characterize a higher band score. Focusing on more natural collocations will help improve this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'International Student's club' (missing article 'the'), 'the one of the most selling dish' (incorrect article usage and pluralization), and 'in an event' (should be 'the event'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization errors, such as 'Moreover, It'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing your control over articles and subject-verb agreement will significantly improve your accuracy.
