Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Luis,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am aware of the upcoming event that we are organizing and it would be my honor to add a dish from my country to the menu.
If you allow, I would like to make Panipuri which is a very famous dish in India, loved by all the generations. It has three main elements which are balls, stuffing and water. The balls are made of wheat flour and then deep fried. The stuffing is made of potatoes and chickpeas along with some basic spices. The water is the main element of the dish. I can make different flavors of water. There is one basic water made with green chilies, coriander, mint and lemon which would give a bit tangy and spicy taste. Then there is one made with dates and tamarind which is a sweet one.
I am pretty sure that whoever tries it would love it because of the flavors it has altogether which is why I think it should be included in the event.
Please let me know what do you think about this.
Regards,
Kunj Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, provided a clear description of Panipuri, and explained why it would be a valuable addition to the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organizer. To improve, you could expand slightly on the 'why' section; while you mention the flavors, explaining how the interactive nature of eating Panipuri could enhance the social atmosphere of the club event would demonstrate a more sophisticated development of ideas, pushing your score toward the higher bands.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'If you allow,' 'Then there is,' and 'which is why.' However, the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition between describing the dish and explaining why it should be included is a bit abrupt. Using a wider variety of linking words or phrases to connect your ideas would help improve the overall flow and coherence of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully describing the ingredients and the sensory experience of the dish (e.g., 'tangy,' 'spicy,' 'deep fried'). There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise or less common collocations. For example, instead of saying 'loved by all the generations,' you could use 'popular across all age groups.' Similarly, 'make a dish' could be elevated to 'prepare a traditional delicacy.' Your current vocabulary is functional but could be more varied.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am aware of the upcoming event that we are organizing' and 'The water is the main element of the dish.' Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically accurate. There is a minor error in the final paragraph: 'Please let me know what do you think about this' should be 'Please let me know what you think about this' (indirect question structure). While your grammar is generally reliable, incorporating a greater variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, would demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
