Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I hope you are doing well. I am one of the members of an International Students' club writing to express my deepest contribution to the event, where I can also have a chance to represent my traditional food to make it a popular food among others.

I decided to cook one of the famous dishes of my country, which is rajma rice and it's the traditional dish of India. People of my nation mostly prefer to make in different occasions, like marriages, birthday parties and in religious places as well.

Rajma rice is basically called kidney beans and rice. The ingredients for this dish are homemade, which include a variety of traditional spices and is made with vegetable oil . Firstly we have to boil the kidney beans and then mix them with the gravy and finally cook it for 20minutes on a low flame. At the end, serve it with properly cooked rice .

This reicepy should be included in the event due to couple of reasons , initally it adds to the history and culture of my country and everyone gets the opportunity to know the Indian culture with the help of food which is tremendious and easy way. Secondly it taste really delicious , so all present over there enjoy the dish. I hope you will assure my nation dish to be included .

Thank you.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to cook a dish, described it as kidney beans and rice, and provided clear reasons for its inclusion, such as its cultural significance and delicious taste. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. To reach a higher band, ensure that your introduction is more direct; phrases like 'express my deepest contribution' are slightly unnatural in this context. Additionally, while the description of the dish is clear, providing a bit more detail about the specific flavor profile or cultural context would further develop your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised into paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'At the end', which help guide the reader through your explanation. However, the use of these devices is sometimes a bit mechanical. There are also minor issues with punctuation and spacing, such as the extra spaces before commas and periods, which slightly disrupts the flow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring consistent paragraph spacing would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message effectively. You use topic-specific terms like 'ingredients', 'gravy', and 'traditional spices'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'express my deepest contribution' (instead of 'offer my contribution') and 'assure my nation dish' (instead of 'ensure my national dish is included'). Spelling errors like 'reicepy' and 'tremendious' also occur. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and proofreading for common spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'people of my nation mostly prefer to make in different occasions' (missing object) and 'it taste really delicious' (subject-verb agreement). There are also issues with article usage and preposition placement. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would significantly improve your accuracy.
