Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear luis,
I am writing this letter to make an offer for a dish from my country for the event. I want to represent my country in this event by serving veg nachos.
I would love to make veg nachos, which can be a healthier option at the event. It will consist a flatbread with beans and other veggies in it with some fresh homemade salsa.
It is easy to eat dish that we gonna serve in a small box and people can carry it with them and can eat while exploring other option. I am confident that everyone gonna love this delicious dish from south India and gonna enjoy a little side of India. And with that i would love to serve sweet drink called lassi which can be a good refreshment for everyone .
As a member of this club , i would love to contribute in this event with this effort.
yours sincearly,
charanpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, described it as a flatbread with beans and salsa, and explained its suitability for the event due to its portability. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat basic. To reach a higher band, you could provide more descriptive detail about the cultural significance of the dish or explain the preparation process in more sophisticated terms. The inclusion of 'lassi' was a nice touch, though it was not explicitly requested, it fits well within the context of the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the offer to the description and finally the justification. Paragraphing is present, though the structure is a bit fragmented. You use some cohesive devices like 'As a member of this club' and 'It is easy to eat', but the flow between sentences can feel a bit mechanical. The use of 'And with that' to start a sentence is slightly informal and repetitive in its structure. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between your ideas would help elevate the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'refreshment', 'contribute', and 'represent'. However, there is a reliance on simpler, repetitive phrasing such as 'I would love to' and 'gonna'. To improve, you should aim for a wider range of vocabulary and avoid informal contractions like 'gonna', which are not appropriate for a formal or semi-formal letter. Using more precise adjectives to describe the food would also demonstrate a stronger lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'It will consist a flatbread' (should be 'consist of'), 'easy to eat dish' (should be 'an easy-to-eat dish'), and 'yours sincearly' (spelling error). The use of informal contractions like 'gonna' negatively impacts the grammatical formality of the letter. While your meaning is always clear, the frequency of these small errors and the lack of more sophisticated grammatical structures keep this in the 6.0 range. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and formal punctuation will help improve your accuracy.
