Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
Hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter regarding the event that is to be hosted next month at students club. As people do come from various parts of the world with their popular food dish I am particularly keen to showcase staple food from my country.
Firstly, my country is famous for spices so I would love to make herbed rice with paneer butter masala curry. This dish have gained 2nd rank in world's popular dishes list. Furthermore, this curry is made from aromatic spices blend with onion and tomato gravy rich in whole ingredients such as cardamon and bay leaves with cream topped and when it is ready we do garnish with coriander leaves. Especially, rice is made from cumin seeds giving delicious taste paired with curry.
Lastly, I would love to include in the event where people can have rich aromatic taste of curry showcasing my countries spices taste. As, it does have mild taste people would definitely love to try on this popular food item.
Thank you for giving me a chance to showcase popular dish and I look forward for your positive response.
Yours Faithfully,
Binn

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly offer to make a dish, describe it in detail, and explain why it is a suitable addition to the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of ideas is slightly repetitive, particularly in the third paragraph where the explanation for why the dish should be included overlaps with the description provided earlier. To reach a higher band, ensure each paragraph adds distinct value to the reader rather than restating previous points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more refined. For instance, the transition between the description of the dish and the explanation of why it should be included feels a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between ideas would enhance the overall coherence of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using specific terms like 'aromatic', 'gravy', and 'garnish'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'whole ingredients' (likely meaning 'whole spices') and 'countries spices taste'. Additionally, the phrase 'have gained 2nd rank' is slightly unnatural. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that your vocabulary choices sound natural in the context of describing food and cultural events.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('This dish have gained', 'rice is made... giving delicious taste') and missing articles ('at students club', 'in world's popular dishes list'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma placement. To achieve a higher score, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, specifically regarding article usage and subject-verb agreement, and try to incorporate more varied, error-free complex sentences.
