Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to offer my help with the upcoming international food festival by preparing a popular dish from my country, India. I would be delighted to make vegetable biryani, which is one of the most well-known and widely enjoyed Indian dishes.

Vegetable biryani is a flavourful rice dish prepared with a variety of fresh vegetables, aromatic spices and herbs. The ingredients are layered together and slowly cooked, giving the dish a rich aroma and distinctive taste. It can also be served with yoghurt or a refreshing salad.

I believe vegetable biryani would be an excellent addition to the event because it would introduce international students to the rich flavours of Indian cuisine. Moreover, as it is a vegetarian dish, it can be enjoyed by people with different dietary preferences. Since Indian food is popular around the world, I am confident that it would attract many visitors and contribute to the success of the festival.

I would be happy to prepare the dish and assist with serving it during the event. Please let me know if you would like me to participate.

Kind regards,

Moksh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly offer to prepare vegetable biryani, provide a descriptive explanation of the dish, and offer logical reasons for its inclusion, such as its vegetarian nature and its global popularity. The tone is consistently appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, maintaining a polite and helpful register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, ensuring the reader understands both the nature of the contribution and the rationale behind it. The structure is logical and follows the conventions of a formal letter perfectly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is well-organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the offer to the description, then to the justification, and finally to the closing. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Since', and 'as it is' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall readability of the text. There is a natural flow throughout the response, and the use of referencing is precise, ensuring the reader can easily follow your train of thought.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the context. Phrases such as 'flavourful rice dish', 'aromatic spices', and 'distinctive taste' are well-chosen and add descriptive quality to your writing. The language is natural and precise, with no noticeable errors in word choice or collocation. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it could be further elevated by incorporating slightly more sophisticated or varied synonyms to reach the highest band, but for this task, the current range is more than sufficient to convey your message clearly and effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The grammar is highly accurate throughout the response. You use a variety of sentence structures, including complex sentences such as 'Since Indian food is popular around the world, I am confident that it would attract many visitors...' and 'The ingredients are layered together and slowly cooked, giving the dish a rich aroma...'. Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The control over verb tenses and clause structures is consistent, reflecting a high level of proficiency and attention to detail.
