Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
How are you doing? I hope everything thing is good. I am Kanika one of the members of international student’s club. I’m writing to give you a suggestion to include an Indian dish too.
As our club is hosting an event to celebrate famous food from all over the world and numerous students in our university belong to India. So considering the rich culture of India as well as their sentiments we should inculcate an Indian dish too. On top of that I can make one which is very popular among Indians known as Jalebi.
Jalebi is a kind of dessert. Which is sweet and crispy. It is made from flour which is then fried and sweetened. We can make it more healthier by using gram flour and good quality oil. I am pretty sure all will enjoy it.
I really hope you will consider my suggestion as it’s an opportunity for all Indians to showcase our culture and traditions in terms of our food to other students belonging to various countries . Moreover, we have listed only savoury items yet so it will be a good idea as well to include two or more sweet dishes in the event. It can be a wise decision financially as well.
I look forward to hearing from you and hoping you will not let me down.
Yours truly

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter achieves the task requirements reasonably well. It offers a specific dish (Jalebi) from the writer's country and explains its relevance, fulfilling the prompts. However, the explanation could be more detailed regarding the preparation and cultural significance of the dish. The connection to the event could be clearer too; a more compelling reason why it should be included would strengthen this part.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The coherence and cohesion in the letter are generally logical, as ideas are presented in a structured manner. However, some sentences transition awkwardly, such as, "On top of that I can make one which is very popular among Indians known as Jalebi," which could flow better. The use of linking phrases can improve the overall flow and connections between sentences.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is appropriate for the context, but it tends to lack variety and precision. Phrases such as "kind of dessert" and "on top of that" can be made more sophisticated. The writer does use some relevant terms, but a wider range of high-level vocabulary would boost clarity and impact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The grammatical range is adequate, with complex sentences present. However, there are some mistakes, like "everything thing is good" and "should inculcate an Indian dish too," which detract from the clarity. These errors indicate a need for more careful proofreading and attention to detail in grammatical structure.
Overall feedback
Overall, your letter addresses the task with a clear suggestion for a dish to include in the event. Your enthusiasm for showcasing your culture is commendable. However, to improve, focus on enhancing coherence by using clearer transitions between your ideas. Work on expanding your vocabulary to avoid repetitive phrases and consider honing your grammatical accuracy by reviewing basic sentence structures. More specific details about the dish and its cultural relevance could elevate your letter significantly.
