Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I am very excited to hear that our club is going to organize an event in which we will be having the taste from different regions of the world.

As India is also very popular for its traditional food around the world, I want to introduce one of the famous dishes Samosa which is salty and spicy in taste.

It is triangular in shape and has a crunchy texture. These Samosa's comes with a filling of potatoes, peas and some local spices, which are wrapped inside tortillas. This dish is deply fried in vegetable oil and served with a tangy ketchup.

Samosa's could be a great choice for the appetizers as it is small in size and will be a quick snack in the event. Guests will definietly like the crunchy layer and spicy taste of the filling.

I will be happy to hear from you.

Kind regards

Simarpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, provided a descriptive account of the samosa, and explained its suitability for the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a club member. To improve, you could expand slightly on the cultural significance of the dish to further develop your ideas, as the current explanation focuses primarily on the physical attributes and taste. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure, with each paragraph addressing a specific part of the prompt. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the introduction to the description and finally the justification. You have used basic cohesive devices such as 'As', 'It is', and 'This dish' to link your sentences. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', 'In addition to this') to improve the flow between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the dish, such as 'triangular', 'crunchy', 'tangy', and 'filling'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'deply' (deeply) and the unnecessary use of apostrophes in plurals like 'Samosa's'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on accurate pluralization and refining your use of descriptive adjectives will help improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'These Samosa's comes' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'I am very excited to hear that our club is going to organize an event in which we will be having the taste' (slightly unnatural phrasing). The use of punctuation is generally acceptable, but the apostrophe errors mentioned previously are a recurring issue. Increasing your control over subject-verb agreement and refining complex sentence construction will enhance your accuracy.
