Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter for suggest a one of the popular dish in our country which you will make an International Student club event.

Let me explain more, although India is diverse country due to which a lot of dishes are popular an among the individuals, I want to offer to make a Halwa which is a traditional dish. In addition, the recipe of halwa is pretty simple to make a Halwa we need sugar, milk, bread and so on things which we easily take from our houses.

There are many reasons why it is vital to add the Halwa in the event. Firstly, it is a sweet dish and we all know Indian love sweet dishes. Secondly, I also worked in food industry due to which I know this will be a suitable dish for the event.

Hope to have a positive response from your side as soon as possible.

Yours faithfully,

Jaswinder Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining its inclusion. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the description of 'Halwa' is quite basic, focusing on ingredients rather than the sensory experience or cultural significance. Additionally, the explanation for why it should be included relies on a generalization about Indian preferences and a brief mention of your professional background. To reach a higher band, you should expand on these points with more specific detail and ensure the tone is consistently appropriate for the requested recipient, Luis, rather than using 'Dear Sir'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Firstly', and 'Secondly' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the opening sentence where the purpose of the letter is slightly muddled. The transition between the description of the dish and the reasons for its inclusion could be smoother. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, unified focus will help improve the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'diverse', 'traditional', and 'professional'. However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'suggest a one of the popular dish' and 'so on things which we easily take from our houses'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensuring that your word forms (singular/plural) are accurate. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives would also enhance the quality of your response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you are able to convey your meaning, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'I am writing this letter for suggest', 'a lot of dishes are popular an among the individuals', and 'Indian love sweet dishes' (should be 'Indians'). These errors are noticeable and occur in basic structures, which affects the overall accuracy. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement, article usage, and prepositional phrases. Practicing the construction of complex sentences will also help you demonstrate a wider range of grammatical control.
