Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

As an event for celebrating popular food from around the world is almost near, I would like to give you a suggestion to include one of my local dish to it.

I am from Gujarat which is located in western part of the India. From where I come, there are plenty of delicious dishes made by local people. One of them is called Vada Pav, it is considered to be the most popular food in India.

It contains a bread which we call it Pav and followed by a ball type structure battered with spicy flour called Vada. The recipe for this dish is very easy. Just take a pav, cut it from the middle and after applying green corriander chutney on it, add a fried vada in it.

This is not just a simple dish, but it is a recognisation of my tribe throughout my country. And I believe that everyone in our club and guest should try it once. Therefore, I would like to make an offer to make this dish in our upcoming event.

Thank you for taking time to read this email. Looking forward to your reply.

Yours sincerely,

Coman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, provided a clear description of Vada Pav, and explained why it is a suitable inclusion for the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. To improve, you could expand slightly on the 'why' section by linking the dish more explicitly to the theme of 'popular food from around the world' to demonstrate a deeper engagement with the task requirements. Overall, the response is well-focused and fulfills the communicative purpose effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'One of them is', 'Therefore', and 'As an event', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences is smoother. For instance, the transition between describing the dish and explaining its significance could be more fluid.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some specific terms like 'coriander chutney' and 'battered', which are appropriate for the context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'recognisation of my tribe' (likely meaning 'representative of my culture') and 'give you a suggestion to include one of my local dish' (should be 'dishes'). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations would enhance your score. The errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your expression.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'As an event... is almost near' (should be 'approaching'), 'one of my local dish' (should be 'dishes'), and 'everyone in our club and guest should try' (should be 'guests'). Additionally, the phrase 'followed by a ball type structure' is slightly awkward. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and pluralisation. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you move into the higher band range.
